Mandate

The Treaty Relations Commission provides a forum for discussion between treaty first nations and Canada on how historical treaties and treaty issues can be understood in contemporary terms. Through the aid of a Treaty Commissioner, the Commission assists first nations and Canada in achieving mutual respect, rebuilding and enhancing the treaty relationship, maintaining positive intergovernmental relations, conducting independent and focussed research, and creating public understanding of treaties.

Appointment Provisions

The Treaty Commissioner shall be appointed by the Governor in Council, by agreement of the parties (Government of Canada and the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs), for an initial term of five years. The Treaty Commissioner may be removed prior to the expiry of his or her term by mutual agreement of the Parties. The Treaty Commissioner may be appointed for such further term as is agreed upon by the Parties.
