Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council Act

The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council is comprised of:

• a President appointed by the Governor in Council for such term not exceeding five years as the GIC may determine; eligible for reappointment in the same or another capacity; and
• not more than eighteen members appointed by the Governor in Council for such term not exceeding three years as will ensure as far as possible the expiration in any one year of the terms of appointment of fewer than half of the members; eligible for reappointment in the same or another capacity.

A Vice-President may be appointed by the Council, with approval of the GIC, from among members.

In the event of the absence or incapacity of the President or if the office of President is vacant, the Vice-President has and may exercise all the powers of the President.

There is an Executive Committee of the Council consisting of the President, the Vice-President and at least six other members selected by the Council.

A majority of the members of the Council shall constitute a quorum at any meeting of the Council. A majority of the members of the Executive Committee shall constitute a quorum at any meeting of the Executive Committee. (By-laws of Council).
