Minister of Labour and Seniors

The National Seniors Council advises on current and emerging issues and opportunities related to the quality of life, health and well-being of seniors, both now and in the future; as needed, undertakes activities such as commissioning research, convening expert panels and roundtables, and holding consultative meetings; and delivers well-balanced advice, taking into account the views of experts; seniors; organizations and groups that provide seniors' programs and services; provincial/territorial advisory bodies on seniors; and other relevant stakeholders and interested parties.

The Council is to be comprised of a maximum of 12 members, who are to be appointed by the Governor in Council on the recommendation of the Minister of Seniors and the Minister of Health, to hold office during pleasure for a term not exceeding three years. As far as possible, the terms of office are to be staggered such that not more than half of the member's terms will expire in any one year. The Governor in Council must designate one of the members as chairperson on the recommendation of the Minister of Seniors and the Minister of Health. A member may be re-appointed once to the Council in the same or another capacity.

The Council membership may be diverse, including seniors, representatives of organizations that serve the needs or interests of seniors, and experts from fields of study related to seniors and aging.
